Proximap 1.5.0: A More Powerful 3D Reconstruction Workspace
Proximap 1.5.0 introduces a major upgrade to the 3D Reconstruction Viewport, with floating editing tools, in-viewport camera visualisation, interactive selection, 3D cropping, and point-cloud transformation. This release also strengthens the reconstruction and mesh-processing pipelines with granular step resumption, automatic cleanup backends, seam-leveled texturing, and an isolated Python worker for improved cross-platform reliability.
A Modular Floating Toolbox
The Reconstruction Viewport now features a compact, Unity-style vertical toolbox positioned directly over the canvas. The toolbox is draggable and provides quick access to dedicated windows for:
- Transform
- Mesh Cleanup
- Mesh Cut
- Camera Registration
Each tool opens in its own movable floating panel. This keeps the viewport clear while making frequently used controls immediately accessible.
Camera Frustums Inside the Viewport
Source cameras are now represented as wireframe frustums with scaled image planes inside the 3D scene, creating a workflow similar to RealityCapture.
Selecting a frustum opens a floating Picture-in-Picture card containing the source image, camera ID, and a Look Through Camera button. Camera Settings also provide real-time controls for frustum scale and image-plane opacity.
This makes it easier to understand camera coverage, inspect individual source images, and compare reconstructed geometry against the original capture positions.
RealityCapture-Style 3D Cropping
The Mesh Cut window now includes an axis-aligned 3D crop box. Six independently positioned face handles define the active volume, allowing geometry to be trimmed either inside or outside the box.
Cropping is calculated using a NumPy-based engine and previewed directly in the viewport, giving users precise control over unwanted geometry before applying the cut.
Box and Lasso Selection
A transparent screen-space selection layer now sits over the live VisPy canvas. Both Box and Lasso modes are supported.
Hold Ctrl to begin drawing a selection and release it to finalise the region. The resulting selection can be used to isolate and trim points or mesh geometry without leaving the 3D view.
Point-Cloud Transformation
A new floating Transform card provides interactive controls for positioning and correcting point clouds. Operations include:
- Translation
- Rotation
- PCA-based automatic leveling
- Centering
- Ground-plane snapping
Every adjustment is previewed live before it is committed. Large numerical values are also handled correctly without causing the card layout to overflow.
The older cloud alignment and cloud fusion modules have been removed. Their role is now covered by this more stable, interactive workflow.
Perspective and Orthographic Views
A segmented Persp / Ortho control now appears beneath the viewport orientation gizmo. It switches the VisPy TurntableCamera between perspective and orthographic projection instantly.
When returning to perspective mode, Proximap restores the previously selected field of view.
Faster, Bundled Background Removal
Automatic background removal returns in version 1.5.0 with the lightweight silueta.onnx model.
The model is bundled with Proximap, so there is no additional download during setup or first use. Replacing the previous U²-Net implementation also reduces the application’s packaged size.
Expanded Mobile Bridge Support
The Mobile Bridge now accepts .ply point clouds in addition to images and video.
ZIP archives can also be uploaded. Proximap automatically extracts their contents into the active project folder, making it easier to transfer complete capture datasets from another device.
The mobile web interface has also received a refined dark-theme redesign for clearer navigation and improved usability on smaller screens.
More Reliable Mesh Cleanup
Mesh processing now chooses automatically between several cleanup backends:
- PyMeshLab running directly
- PyMeshLab running through an isolated subprocess
- Open3D
- Trimesh
This fallback system improves reliability across operating systems and avoids failures caused by incompatible system-level PyMeshLab installations.
Supported cleanup operations include face reduction, duplicate removal, hole closing, non-manifold repair, Taubin smoothing, and vertex welding.
Granular Pipeline Resumption
Reconstruction jobs can now resume from any named pipeline step, including image_preparation, features_extracted, and features_matched.
Earlier completed steps are skipped, saving time when retrying a later stage or adjusting part of an existing reconstruction.
A new image_max_resolution parameter can also limit image dimensions before feature extraction, helping control memory use when processing large, high-resolution datasets.
Retexturing After Mesh Edits
Mesh Cleanup and Mesh Cut windows now include a Retexture button.
After editing geometry, users can run a fresh texture-projection pass without repeating the complete reconstruction pipeline. This shortens the path from cleanup to an updated textured result.
Improved Texture Seams
Texture-atlas generation now includes seam leveling. The process reduces visible colour differences along UV boundaries, producing a more consistent appearance across the final textured mesh.
Isolated Python 3.10 Worker
PyMeshLab operations can now run through a bundled Python 3.10 environment with its own PyMeshLab wheel.
Keeping these operations isolated prevents conflicts with the host Python installation and improves consistency across Windows, macOS, Linux .deb, and Snap packages.
Bug Fixes
Version 1.5.0 also includes several stability and packaging fixes:
- Corrected camera orientation when entering and exiting Look Through mode from arbitrary azimuth and elevation angles.
- Prevented large transform values from overflowing the Transform card layout.
- Added compatibility for both apply_coord_taubin_smoothing and meshing_apply_coord_taubin_smoothing across PyMeshLab versions.
- Ensured interface elements and icon assets are included in Windows NSIS, macOS, Linux .deb, and Snap packages.
- Removed the unstable cloud_aligner.py and cloud_fusion.py modules in favor of the Point Cloud Transform Card.
Proximap 1.5.0 brings editing closer to the reconstruction itself. With camera-aware inspection, direct viewport selection, non-destructive transform previews, flexible cropping, and a more resilient processing pipeline, users can move from captured data to a clean, textured 3D result with fewer interruptions.
